    Dr. John Gauch joined the Computer Science and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas as a Professor in 2008. Previously, he taught at the College of Computer Science at Northeastern University in Boston from 1989 to 1993, and in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Kansas from 1993 to 2016. While at the University of Kansas, he was Associate Chair for Graduate Studies from 2000 to 2005, and Co-Director of the e-Learning Design Laboratory from 2002 to 2006.

    Prof. Gauch teaching interests include introductory programming classes, computer graphics, image processing, video processing, and computer vision. During his career has taught over 80 courses to over 4000 students. Prof. Gauch was awarded the Archie and Nancy Dykes Outstanding Teaching Award at the University of Kansas in 2001. He has also been awarded the Imhoff Teaching Award in the College of Engineering in 2015 and was inducted as a Fellow of the Teaching Academy at the University of Arkansas in 2017.

    Dr. Gauch conducts research in multimedia applications, developing tools and techniques for real-time digital video analysis. In particular, he has worked on methods to identify scene transition (cuts, fades, and dissolves), methods to automatically locate repeated video sequences (e.g. commercials) in real-time, and methods to index and retrieve video clips from very large databases (thousands of hours of content) based on image features. Dr. Gauch is also interested in image processing and computer vision techniques for biomedical image enhancement, image segmentation, and motion tracking applications. This research has resulted in over 70 publications in these areas including one book and one patent. Dr. Gauch has graduated 10 Ph.D. students and over 30 M.S. students.
