Biographical Information
Dr. John Gauch joined the Computer Science and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas as a Professor in 2008. He received his Honors B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Computer Science from Queen's University in Ontario in 1981 and 1982 respectively, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989. From 1989 to 1993 he was an Assistant Professor in the College of Computer Science at Northeastern University in Boston. In 1993, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Kansas where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1996. While at Kansas, he was Associate Chair for Graduate Studies from 2000 to 2005, and Co-Director of the e-Learning Design Laboratory from 2002 to 2006. Dr. Gauch has graduated seven Ph.D. students and over thirty M.S. students. In 2001, he was awarded the Archie and Nancy Dykes Outstanding Teaching Award at the University of Kansas.
Dr. Gauch conducts research in multimedia applications, developing tools and techniques for real-time digital video analysis. In particular, he has worked on methods to identify scene transition (cuts, fades, and dissolves), methods to automatically locate repeated video sequences (eg. commercials) in real-time, and methods to index and retrieve video clips from very large databases (thousands of hours of content) based on image features. Dr. Gauch is also interested in image processing and computer vision techniques for biomedical image enhancement, image segmentation, and motion tracking applications. This research has resulted in over sixty publications in these areas including one book and one patent.
Dr. Gauch has been active in technology transfer for over a decade. His early research in digital video libraries was transferred to FasTV.com in 1997. This technology was able to, in real-time, digitize and segment a broadcast news stream into stories, simultaneously indexing it by terms extracted from the closed-captions. In 1999, he developed and licensed technology to monitor multiple video streams to Turner Broadcasting to allow them to verify in real-time that commercials were sent to local cable operators were being shown in market. In 2002, he founded Veatros LLC to further commercialize video indexing and retrieval software. Veatros was acquired by DivX Inc. in 2007 to provide an improved video search and discovery service on the DivX Connected platform.
