Looking for Undergraduate research assistants

I am currently looking for two (2) undergraduate students who are interested in working as an UG research assistant in the following research area.  Students’ research activities will be supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, entitled “Research Experiences to Design for Inclusion (REDI).”  The purpose of the Research Experiences to Design for Inclusion (REDI) is to provide undergraduate students with training and education in interface design for users with severe visual disabilities.  Please read the following project description and contact me at cnam@uark.edu, if you are interested.

Research Project Title:  Science and Engineering Accessibility for Students with Visual Impairments.

Advisor:  Chang S. Nam, Ph.D., Dept of Industrial Engineering, University of Arkansas

Description:  There has been little systematic study of this assumption.  For example, how the additional haptic feedback influences blind students’ construction of knowledge, conceptual change from their misconceptions, attitude toward science learning, and learning motivation still remain unclear.  To address these educational and technological challenges that students with visual impairments still face, HCI Lab, UA has developed the Innovative Flexible Experimental Environment for Learning in SCIENCE (I FEEL SCIENCE) system with National Science Foundation (NSF) support, a haptically enhanced science learning system for visually impaired students.  The main goals of this project are to investigate the cognitive and affective impacts of haptic experiences on visually impaired students’ science learning.  Research assistants will have the opportunity to work with Virginia Tech graduate and undergraduate students, as well as students and teachers at the Arkansas School for the Blind, Little Rock, AR. Lab access, computer workstations, and software, as necessary, will be provided.

Intellectual merit and broader impacts: This opportunity is designed to provide undergraduate students with research opportunities that will allow them to use experiential knowledge to practice inclusive design. Inclusive design is a design value that emphasizes the importance of conducting and completing a design process that gives priority to the needs of a variety of capabilities such that the outcomes yield products that are usable by most.  This opportunity also presents undergraduate students with a unique experience to design an innovative haptic learning environment and to target users with visual disabilities as the design focus. Students will also receive a significant amount of training in product and project evaluation, which is a neglected research skill, even at the graduate level.

Stipend: Monthly stipends in the amount of $450/week for each student will be paid by the REDI program for the full academic year, September 2009 – May 2010.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students, particularly those who want to write an honors thesis in the proposed research area will be preferred.

Xerox Corp’s document imaging facility in Hot Springs, employs about 600 people. They are in constant need of IT professionals, software engineers, programmers and the like. Because of Xerox’s strong affirmative action commitments, they are particularly in need of minority and female IT professionals.

If you are looking to find a good job with a Fortune 100 company, and stay in Arkansas (a gorgeous part of Arkansas, at that!) to boot, please submit your resume to Xerox.

Resumes should go to Jason Spavins, General Manager, North America Imaging Operations, Xerox Corporation, 3315 Central, Hot Springs, AR, 71901.

A new retail clothing store is opening in the area. We are setting up an e-commerce site, probably a blog, and maybe a few other web-related tools. We are looking for someone with strong creative web design skills to help us create a consistent visual theme across all web apps and connect the various apps we chose together into something that feels more or less seamless.

The ideal candidate should have the following technical skills.

* Strong web design skills, including modern standards-based (HTML4+CSS) design techniques.
* Able to work with the templating systems present in common Open Source apps. In particular:
** Magento (http://www.magentocommerce.com/)
** Wordpress (http://wordpress.org/)
** Drupal (http://drupal.org/)
** Google Apps (mail, calendar, docs, etc.)
* Comfortable with PHP & MySQL. Heavy coding is unlikely, but the occasional hack may be needed.
* Comfortable with a UNIX/Linux server environment
* Willing to use a change control system for all work.
* Conversant with "Web 2.0" and "Social Media" (whatever those two terms mean this week!)

Note that I said that the above describes the "ideal" candidate. Don't let one or two missing skills stop you from contacting us. Remember, though, that this is a largely creative/graphic arts position. Anyone who wants the job should be prepared to show samples of their work.

Resumes can be sent to <dfaulkner@pobox.com>
