CSCE 4413 is an introduction to operating systems concepts. Topics include system structures, multithreaded programming, process management, storage management, files, distributed systems, and case studies. This semester we will use the textbook by A. Silberschatz, P. Galvin, and G. Gagne, Operating Systems Concepts, Sixth Edition, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 2002.

• Prerequisites: Computer Organization (e.g., CSCE 3213) and Data Structures (e.g., CSCE 2143)

• Grading:
  • Homework: 35%
    Homework assignments will be given regularly throughout the semester. Homework will consist of a combination of written exercises and programming assignments. Homework is due at the start of class on the date that it is due. Late submissions are subject to a grading penalty. Homework will not be accepted after papers have been returned.
  • Test 1: 20%
  • Test 2: 20%
  • Comprehensive Test 3: 25%

• Safety and Computer Use:
  • All use of computer equipment at the University of Arkansas falls under the acceptable computer use guidelines of the University. Any violations of these guidelines will result in dismissal from the course with a failing grade, and possible punitive or legal action!

• Inclement Weather Policy:
  • If Fayetteville Public Schools are in session then we will have class. If Fayetteville Public Schools are not in session then I will post an announcement to the web site by 10:00 a.m. the day of class if class will be held. If an announcement is not posted, or if csce.uark.edu is down, then you may assume that class is cancelled. If class is cancelled then we will discuss schedule changes during the next class period. If class is cancelled on the day that an assignment is due or an exam is scheduled then the scheduled date will be the next class period.
